High caliber tutoring for students in the Ithaca area.

About

Marty Kaminsky founded Ithaca Tutoring in 2011 to meet the growing need for one-on-one instruction in the Ithaca area.

TEACHING CAREER:

As a retired elementary school teacher with 32.5 years teaching experience and 25 years of private tutoring experience, Marty Kaminsky has seen it all. Marty is pretty much a big kid himself, able to understand children intuitively and adapt his techniques to meet each student’s needs. As a private tutor, he has helped students catch up to grade level, learn how to read, excel in math, and soar in writing. Kids know him as that guy who’s not afraid to use a rubber chicken as inspiration for fun writing writing exercises, while parents know him as the guy who will do what it takes to get the job done. He was the Apple Teacher of the Year Award winner in 2001.

NON-PROFIT EXPERIENCE:

Concerned about the ongoing struggles of low performing students in the Ithaca schools Marty founded Golden Opportunity (GO) eight years ago. This not-for-profit tutoring program matches low-income students who are working below grade level with retired teachers for free tutoring. GO currently pairs 48 students with tutors for after school tutoring 60 hours each year and is looking to expand regionally.

EXPERIENCE WRITING FOR CHILDREN:

Marty is the author of Uncommon Champions:  Fifteen Athletes Who Battled Back (Boyds Mill Press 2000). He is also the
author of over 100 articles in national magazines such as Highlights for Children, Sports Illustrated for Kids, Disney Adventure, Sports Illustrated and Parenting.

Marty has also won a number of sports writing awards from Highlights for Children:

  • Sports Feature of the Year, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2001, 2002, 2006
  • Biography of the Year, 2006
